This course provides a select overview of art and architecture from India, Southeast Asia, China, Korea, and Japan from pre-history to modern times. Students will apply critical evaluation and comparative analysis of secular and religious trends to assess and appreciate how historical trends have influenced and shaped the arts in Asia today. A field trip will be required.

As the first course in the Technest Coding Academy, students will learn to think algorithmically to create code and to solve programming problems. Utilizing MIT-created instructional videos, SJCC faculty will guide, coach, and assist students in creating code. After students view the MIT lecture videos, faculty will answer questions, assist students with lab assignments, and proctor exams. This course is based on the MITx6.00 Introduction to Computer Science course curriculum.  Enrollment in this class is contingent upon acceptance into the Technest Coding Academy. Interested students will need to contact course instructor listed in the schedule of classes.

As the second course in the Technest Coding Academy, students learn the three main factors of data science: inferential thinking, computational thinking, and real-world relevance. Topics include critical concepts and skills in computer programming and statistical inference, and the analysis of real-world datasets, as well as social issues surrounding data analysis such as privacy and design. This course is based on UC Berkeley's Data 8 course curriculum.  Enrollment in this class is contingent upon acceptance into the Technest Coding Academy. As the third course in the Technest Coding Academy, students are exposed to the emerging platform called the Internet of Things (IoT). Topics include: exploration of the convergence of multiple disciplines leading to modern smartphones; exploring the emerging IoT platform, enabling unprecedented, innovative products and services; learn how information from physical devices in the real world gets communicated to smartphone processors; interfacing common sensors and actuators to hardware; developing software to acquire sensory data, process the data and actuate stepper motors, LEDs, etc. for use in mobile-enabled products.

Students are introduced to microeconomic theory including economic behavior of individual economic units such as consumers, firms, and resource owners. They will examine the market system as a means of solving problems in the production and distribution of goods and services in a society. Students analyze the effectiveness of the price system in providing the society with an equitable distribution of goods, services, and income. They will also study microeconomic problems such as monopoly power of big business and big unions, government regulations and consumer protection, the energy crisis, taxes, and welfare.

Students are introduced to the study of statistics. Students will learn methods of displaying data, descriptive statistics, basic concepts of probability theory, random variables, common statistical distributions, estimates and sample size, hypothesis testing, goodness-of-fit test, contingency table analysis, tests of two independent population parameters, Chi-square, ANOVA, and regression and correlation. Students will apply basic statistical concepts to data from education, business, social sciences, and natural sciences. To aid in the analysis of data, the use of computational technology will be required.
